Bears' first drive falls flat with 3-and-out vs. Chiefs as they trail 7-0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Bears are off to a shaky start in their preseason finale against the Chiefs.
Caleb Williams and the first-team offense went three-and-out in a sequence that included Williams and wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus fumbling a handoff and a false start by rookie tight end Colston Loveland.
On second-and-19, Williams got chased out of the pocket by Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis and threw the ball away. He managed a 14-yard completion to DJ Moore on third down, and the Bears punted.
Williams and the Bears are facing most of the Chiefs’ starters, as opposed to taking on the second-string last week against the Bills.
The Chiefs scored first on an eight-play, 69-yard drive that ended with Isiah Pacheco’s two-yard touchdown run for 7-0 lead.
The Bears held out defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and left guard Joe Thuney for the third consecutive preseason game. Veteran Chris Williams started for Jarrett, and rookie Luke Newman started for Thuney.
