Chargers Top Chiefs in NFL São Paulo Showpiece.
The Los Angeles Chargers opened their 2025 NFL season in style with a thrilling 27-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at the Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil. The game marked the first of this year’s NFL International Series and drew an enthusiastic crowd of 49,000 fans.
Herbert Shines in Season Opener
Justin Herbert was the star of the night, throwing for 318 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 32 rushing yards, including a crucial 19-yard scramble for a first down late in the fourth quarter that sealed the win.
Herbert’s highlight came when he connected with Quentin Johnston on a 23-yard touchdown pass, putting the Chargers ahead 27-18 with just over five minutes remaining.
The Chiefs cut the lead with a 27-yard field goal from Harrison Butker, but that proved to be their final scoring chance. The Chargers ran down the clock with a composed final drive, turning it into a victory march.
Chiefs Struggle to Find Momentum
Patrick Mahomes threw for 258 yards and a touchdown while also running for another score, but the Chiefs never held a lead. A major setback came early when wide receiver Xavier Worthy exited with a shoulder injury after colliding with teammate Travis Kelce.
Despite Mahomes’ efforts, the Chiefs fell short, beginning the 2025 campaign on a rough note. Kansas City is aiming to return to the Super Bowl for a fourth straight year, hoping to reclaim the title after the Philadelphia Eagles ended their two-year reign in February.
For the Chargers, the victory was significant after finishing second to the Chiefs in the AFC West last year and exiting in the wild card round. Herbert praised his team’s execution:
“Just got to go make a play. That’s what we’ve coached and talked about. At the end of the day, it was a fun play. Got down and got the win.”
The Chargers proved they are ready to challenge the Chiefs in the division and make a deeper playoff run this season.
