Trump Imposes 50% Tariff on Indian Goods Over Russian Oil Imports.
U.S. President Donald Trump Imposes Additional 25% Tariff on Indian Goods
On Wednesday (August 6), U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian products.
Following the announcement, Trump stated that India is importing oil from Russia either directly or indirectly.
This new tariff will be implemented in conjunction with the previously declared 25% tariff.According to a report by NDTV, this move comes just days after Trump warned New Delhi against purchasing oil from Russia. With this latest directive, Indian goods may now be subjected to tariffs as high as 50%.
The White House has stated that the decision is part of efforts to strengthen existing sanctions against Russia in response to its actions in Ukraine.
Just last week, the U.S. President had already imposed a 25% tariff on India. Trump warned that if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not move toward ending the war in Ukraine, further tariffs will be imposed on Russia and "secondary sanctions" will be enacted against its allies.Earlier, on Monday, Trump had hinted at this step. Before that, his top diplomatic envoy, Steve Witkoff, held meetings in Moscow in an attempt to persuade Russia to agree to a peace deal in Ukraine.
After failed trade negotiations, U.S.-India relations have hit their lowest point in years. Analysts believe that this move could further complicate bilateral relations between the two nations.
Meanwhile, a few days earlier, an Indian government source revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit China later this month—for the first time in over seven years.
